Succulent

This is the plant . . .

and these are its flowers . . .

Together they seem a little odd to me.

But in a good way.

I believe it is an echevaria succulent.  If that's the case, then it is far from its original homeland of Mexico or northwestern South America.  It's so very different from the dark green, leafy things that grow in my neck of the woods.  Enchanting, really.

I wish I could keep it, but my house is the place where plants come to die.  So I will give it to my grandmother tomorrow for her 88th birthday.  She and my grandfather are green to their very cores and will take good care of this new friend.

And I will visit often.

Last day of school

In our house, no project, event or errand escapes procrastination.  Ever.  And so yesterday, I found myself at the local bookstore fifteen minutes before it closed on the night before the last day of school waiting in line to buy gift cards for my seven year old daughter's teachers.  It was a long lineup, full of other procrastinators, and at a nearby table there was a lovely display of Ecojot notebooks.  We have these notebooks all over our house.  I just can't resist Carolyn Gavin's wonderful designs, so I bought a small one for each of the teachers on our list.

My daughter wrote a sweet note on the first page of each notebook and then we attached a gift card with a little tape to each of the inside covers.  I wrapped them all with a green, polka dot ribbon et voila -- notebook, gift and thank you card all wrapped into one!

A whole lot of colour (and a new journal page)

Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.

~~~
I've decided to take a new approach with the ever-evolving fill-in-the-blanks journal experiment.  First of all, I'm going to try blogging them differently.  Instead of photographing each page, I'm going to display the graphic version.  I was never quite happy with the way the photos were turning out and I'd like to try adding a little colour to the blog.
I've also been fiddling with my blog template and adding a whole lot of colour there too.  This is a huge departure for me and a little scary, actually.  Usually, I prefer muted everything -- in colour choice as well as daily life -- but that's just not working for me anymore.  I want colour, dammit.  I need it.
Finally, I'm going to try to pace myself with journal posts.  From now on, I'll only be posting one or two (maybe three) pages a week.  Summer is well under way and the kiddies and I have things to do, places to go and people to see.  We're a regular Dr. Seuss menagerie!
Now, on to today's page, which includes the usual variation on a conventional to-do list . . .
and a lightning round that will take you places . . .
The full page looks like this . . .
and the black and white version is available here.  I've also created a pdf with the border you see above.  It's here.  Let me know what you think!
Edited to add:  If you'd like to add a splash of colour of your own, download the page with its border, but without colour here.
The inner sanctum and a new journal page
Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.
~~~
Ah, it's good to be back.  We spent the better part of the last three days with a team of two craftsmen - Doug and John - who worked some carpentry miracles on the main floor of our house.  In the process, our living room furniture migrated to the kitchen for a while and at one point, the very, very heavy kitchen appliances were pulled kicking and screaming into the tiny hallway that separates the kitchen from the living room.  (I'm pretty sure that the fridge is still holding a bit of a grudge.)  Mountains of various and sundry stuff were moved upstairs and still line the skinny hallway outside the bedrooms.

While they were here, Doug and John worked with quiet intensity most of the time, but we did have the chance to chat and get to know each other a little.  It wasn't long before they knew where the water glasses were kept and that the snacks on the kitchen counter were for all to share.  Then, when we had to remove the toilet on the main floor for a day, they had no choice but to use the bathroom upstairs - in the inner sanctum -  the room that is not always given the same organizational attention as its counterpart on the first floor, the place where many of our personal grooming items are sitting out there in the open . . .

I think that makes them family now.  I'll have to set two extra places for Christmas dinner and I admit that it felt very strange to see them go yesterday.

Today is a new day, though, and with it comes an overdue journal page.  It includes a spot for your various to-dos . . .

and a spine-tingling lightning round complete with vampires and public speaking . . .

The full page looks a little something like this . . .

and you can find it here.  I'll meet you back here on Monday with a new page.  Happy weekend!

Sometimes life gets in the way . . .

. . . and today is one of those times.  We're having some unscheduled work on our house today and I'm not going to have the computer time and access that I need to get journal page 15 up today.  I hope you'll stay tuned and meet me back here tomorrow!

Filling in the blanks - day 13

Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.

~~~
Monday has come and nearly gone again.  Day 13 of my fill-in-the-blanks journal experiment follows a happy, but tiring, weekend of travelling to visit the wonderful fathers and grandfathers in my family and the husband's.
There has also been some extensive computer wrangling.  One of the husband's accounts was hacked recently and we have undertaken the unenviable task of wiping our hard drive clean and starting fresh.  We didn't lose any data or files, but it feels like all of our programs have taken great offense and are now staging a strike.
After a lot of sighing and head scratching and yes, the odd questionable word uttered under my breath, page 13 is ready to go.  (Whew!)  It includes a to-do list that asks about the people with whom you share your day . . .
and a wee recap of highs and lows . . .
The full page looks like this (when it is placed in the sand at the local park) . . .
and is available here.  Hopefully, page 14 will be a little easier to share.  Meet me back here tomorrow and we'll see!
Filling in the blanks - day 11
Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.
~~~

Day 11 of my fill-in-the-blank journal extravaganza and deja vu is sinking in.  Didn't I just write a post yesterday that looked eerily similar to this one?  Happily, the journal page is brand new, but I think the day is swiftly approaching when I'll have to find a new way to post these pages. Stay tuned.  I'm sure a serviceable idea will hit any moment . . .

Until then, today's page includes the usual, slightly alternative to-do list . . .

and a question about habits - good and bad . . .

The full page looks like this . . .

and is available here.  Do tell . . . what's the one thing that you do far too often?  Or not often enough?

Filling in the blanks - day 10

Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.

~~~
It's Wednesday and day 10 of my fill-in-the-blanks journal experiment.  I wrote this post yesterday in anticipation of a visit from my mom today.  She'll be staying for a few days and, truth be told, I'm a little nervous about it because . . . um . . . where will I put all the clutter?
I'm not only referring to the material clutter -- although there is so, so much of it -- but also to the personality clutter that my little family of four has going on and that we're not used to sharing with others, even other family members.  Like all the caving I do while trying to put the kids to bed -- "okay, five more minutes . . . " -- and the way that the husband and I glue ourselves to our respective computers most nights after the kids go to bed and silence ensues.  Or the way we studiously ignore the phone whenever it rings.  Or the fact that discussions about odious bodily functions are perfectly acceptable subjects for discussion at the dinner table.
You can bet that as you read this, I am doing my best to hide the clutter and fashion a list of appropriate topics for discussion at mealtime.
Today's page includes the usual (or slightly unusual, depending on how you look at it) to-do list . . .
and a lightning round inspired by the end of the school year . . .
The full page looks like this . . .
and is available here.  Tell me, what's your best memory of school?
Filling in the blanks - day 9
Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.
~~~
Day 9 of the great fill-in-the-blanks journal adventure and I am utterly enchanted by today's quote by 19th century, Italian composer and poet Arrigo Boito.

"When I saw you I fell in love.  And you smiled because you knew."

For me, it describes so well the intimacy and sense of connection that come with love.  All encompassed in a simple smile.  Mmm, so dreamy . . .

Today's page asks you to list your to-dos in order of difficulty . . .

and to think about the current events that have recently caught your attention . . .

The full page looks a little something like this . . .

and is available here.  I'm curious, what current events or issues are keeping you up at night?

Filling in the blanks - day 8

Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.

~~~
We found this little guy on the weekend, while planting and playing in the backyard.
My daughters wondered why it was just sitting there, why it didn't fly away.  We guessed that it might be waiting for its wings to dry, but in the end we settled on the thought that it would fly away at its own pace, when it was ready.  Sure enough, a few hours later, it was gone.
Now it's Monday and I'm thinking about all of the possibilities of the week ahead.  I hope you are too.  And if you'd like record a few moments from your day, page 8 from my fill-in-the-blanks journal experiment is ready to go!
It includes the usual, alternative take on the average to-do list . . .
and a lightning round that had me thinking about carefree weekends spent outdoors . . .
The full page looks like this . . .
and is available here.  Tomorrow, I'll meet you back here for page 9, but in the meantime, I'd love to hear from you while you're filling in the blanks.  What is one of the things that you used to think was impossible, but went ahead and accomplished anyway?
Filling in the blanks - day 7
Update: The journal page in this post is no longer available for download. For a selection of free, printable journal pages, please visit my Printable Journal Pages collection.
~~~
Seven days into my fill-in-the-blanks journal page experiment and I've taken to having a notebook handy at all times.  My last thoughts at night and first ones in the morning are of new questions to ask and new lists to make.  Creating these journal pages have been a fantastic exercise.  I guess, in a way, this is what the inside of my head looks like . . . some thoughts are handwritten and some are in type; some are neatly contained in boxes and some aren't; some are practical, while others are wishful or nostalgic.

I've also been learning quite a bit as I go along.  Like layout.  Thus far, I've mainly been dividing the pages into rough thirds, but I'd like to learn much more about layout.  Also, I've discovered that photographing a black and white page is deceptively difficult.  It always turns out grey and I'm not entirely sure how to convince the camera to capture with its eye what I see with my own.

But enough of that!  These things will sort themselves out in due course.

Page 7 is ready to go and it includes the usual to-do list variation . . .

and a chance to pat yourself on the back . . .

The full page looks like this:

You can download page 7 here and I hope you enjoy filling in the blanks as much as I've enjoyed making them.

That's it for this week, but join me back here on Monday for page 8!  In the meantime, I'd love to hear your thoughts so far.  Have you been learning a little about yourself too as you work through each page?

The lice are long gone, but I can't seem to get them out of my head

My seven year old daughter brought home a ferocious case of head lice in February.  February.  We found it on a Sunday morning and I'll never forget looking down at my daughter's head while she was happily slurping her cereal and seeing movement, a whole lot of movement.

That was such a frantic, panic-filled day.  We spent the morning calling various family members that we had visited recently to apologize for the possible contamination of their heads and homes.  We scoured the internet, learning all about the life cycle of the common head louse and the many creative and dubious- sounding ways to rid the house of its presence.  By mid-afternoon, we had acquired two bottles of nasty-smelling, pesticide-laden shampoo and slathered it all over the heads of those of us sporting live creatures.  Only the husband was spared.

The lice are now long gone, no thanks to the shampoo, which did very little.  Full extermination involved hours and hours and hours of picking -- nit-picking to be exact.  Turns out I'm pretty good at it.  So good, in fact, that I now see lice everywhere.  That black fleck on the kitchen counter? Lice.  That slight movement over there, visible only to me?  Lice.  My children now put their hands over their heads whenever I go anywhere near them.

The thing is, here we are in June and last weekend the husband and I went to the movies.  I was sitting comfortably for the first hour or so, until I realized that I'd been sitting the whole time with my head resting on the high back of my seat . . . an upholstered seat . . . that some potentially lice-infested stranger had just spent the better part of two hours infecting right before me . . .

Then there's this scene in the Sherlock Holmes movie, which we saw on DVD recently, in which Holmes removes the hat from a thug he has just incapacitated and puts it on his head.  Late 19th century London?  Lice for sure.

As I write this, my head is itching furiously.  Psychosomatically, I hope.  I've been telling myself that once the school year ends, and we no longer receive monthly letters from my daughter's class announcing yet another infestation, I will return to my usual level of feigned calm, cool and collectedness.  I'm confident that I'll lose the phantom itch by the end of the summer -- just in time for the return to school and the beginning of lice season.

P.S.  I'll be back later with today's fill-in-the-blank journal page.
